A senior lecturer in the Department of Biology at the UIB, María works on taxonomy and evolutionary biology in marine invertebrates. She has international experience with collections and museomics. 

A graduate in marine biology with a specialisation in biodiversity and evolutionary biology, and holding a PhD in EVO-DEVO, Enrique has a wide-ranging international background in research into molecular ecology, project management and teaching. 

Holding a double degree in oceanography and environmental sciences, as well as a master’s degree in marine ecology, Jorge is the technical and financial manager at the CBB. He has wide-ranging experience in biodiversity research and project management. 

Natural History Collections Unit

A biologist specialising in natural history collections management, conservation, cataloguing, georeferencing and documentation, Ana has wide-ranging experience in implementing international standards and protocols on natural heritage preservation. 

Jocelyn holds a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Chile and Ph.D. in Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology from UIB. Specialized in Environmental Microbiology and Biodiversity.

A biologist with a master’s in marine biology and a PhD in marine science, technology and management, María specialises in marine annelid taxonomy, anatomy and diversity. She is experienced in collecting and conserving marine life, as well as applied molecular biology and microscopy techniques. 

Holding a PhD in forest ecology with a specialisation in species interactions, Joan is experienced in microclimate and pollinator studies, as well as hymenoptera taxonomy and identification. 

Josef holds a masters degree in Marine Ecology and a bachelors degree in Environmental Management. He has experience researching microplastic pollution and coral reef ecosystems.

A biology graduate from the UIB and holding a master’s degree in oceanography and marine environmental management, Adrià specialises in marine ecosystems and coastal dynamics. He is passionate about large mammals and cartilaginous fish. 

Science Education and Outreach Unit

Anna is a biologist with experience in scientific data circulation and open access to biodiversity data. She is passionate about scientific outreach. 

Genetics and Bioinformatics Unit Genomics Platform

Holding a PhD in molecular biology and clinical microbiology, Lluís specialises in metagenomics and next-generation sequencing techniques (NGS). He has wide-ranging experience in DNA extraction and amplification techniques, preparing libraries, Nanopore sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. 

Holding a PhD in genetics and specialising in population genomics and next-generation sequencing techniques (NGS), Carolina is experienced in Sanger, Nanopore and Illumina sequencing, high molecular weight DNA extraction and preparing libraries. She collaborates with international conservation projects linked to eDNA and monitoring genetic diversity in continental and marine animals. 

Holding a master’s degree in zoology, Rafaela is experienced in molecular biology techniques, including preparing libraries and handling different sequencing platforms. She is trained in bioinformatics with a focus on transcriptomics. Her research and skills centre around evolutionary and developmental biology, specialising in evo-devo and vertebrate eye diversity. 

A graduate in biology and specialising in biotechnology and bioinformatics, Karen is experienced in assembling transcriptomes and developing bioinformatics pipelines. She aims to expand her skills in analysis tools for sequencing generated data. 

A graduate in telecommunications and holding a master’s degree in biomedical engineering, Laura is skilled in viruses and viral taxonomy. She is experienced in assembling genomes, and implementing and creating bioinformatics pipelines. Moreover, she is fluent in different fields, making her a methodical and versatile professional. 

A graduate in oceanography and biotechnology and holding a master’s degree in marine ecology, Paula specialises in molecular biology, with a focus on nucleic acid extraction and qPCR. She is also experienced in microbial ecology and marine invertebrates. 

Data Management and Analysis Unit

Tommaso has a PhD in natural and applied sciences and is experienced in analysing large biological, climate and cartographic databases. His research particularly focuses on understanding the processes that determine species distribution and studying different gaps across multiple databases. 

A graduate in computer engineering from the Complutense University of Madrid, Tomás specialises in developing algorithms and structures for efficient data, machine learning and big data. He previously worked in the private sector on innovative technology solutions. 

Antoni is a graduate in Biology with specializations in Environmental Biotechnology and Marine Ecology. He is experienced in data collection and processing related to conservation biology, including biodiversity, life cycle studies, demography, in vitro cultivation, and eco-physiological research.

Alejandro graduated in biology and holds a master’s degree in marine ecology. He has experience in ecology and ornithology research, developing technology solutions for the private sector, and is specialised in backend development and applying cutting-edge technology. His ability to work in both nature and digital settings enables him to address problems from a valuable and unique perspective. 

Project Team Members

A graduate in microbiology and holding a PhD in environmental science, Imene specialises in ecotoxicology in marine and continental water. She has wide-ranging experience in assessing water pollution risks with biological, chemical and statistical tools. 

PhD in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology specialising in the adaptation of invertebrates to environmental unpredictability. Extensive experience in the field of ecology, from bacteria to invertebrate organisms, from both an evolutionary and genetic perspective.

A graduate in telecommunications engineering and holding a master’s degree in biomedical engineering, 
Tomeu has experience working and collaborating on research projects at the University of the Balearic Islands. He is currently focused on genome assembly, transcriptome studies and developing bioinformatics pipelines. 

Bachelor’s degree in aquatic resource management and a Master’s degree in Marine Resources Environment, specializing in population genetics. He has international experience in taxonomy and population genetics of marine organisms. He is particularly interested in working with RADseq.

PhD Candidates and Postdoctoral Researchers

PhD student in Marine Ecology (UIB). I have a master’s degree in biodiversity and systematics (NABIS) from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). I am interested in the diversity and systematics of marine invertebrates, in particular polychaetes, and the combination of molecular and morphological methods.

Claudio is a PhD Candidate in Marine Ecology at the UIB. His research focuses on the population genetics of endangered marine invertebrates and the role of protected areas in conserving their genetic diversity. He studies connectivity patterns using advanced sequencing techniques. Certified scientific diver with extensive experience in benthic sublittoral habitats and underwater cave environments.
