Motivation
The Balearic Centre for Biodiversity is a key initiative of the University of the Balearic Islands that reflects the institution’s dedication to advancing research and scientific-technical infrastructure. Its mission is to deepen our understanding of the remarkable biological diversity and unique natural environment of the Balearic archipelago. This knowledge is vital for shaping effective conservation and management policies, ensuring the preservation of ecosystem services that biodiversity offers to society.
Comprising a team of expert researchers and technicians, the Balearic Centre for Biodiversity serves as a scientific and technical resource for R&D groups, governmental bodies, and the private sector. The Centre actively promotes strategic collaborations, provides expert consultation, and offers training on biodiversity-related matters.
General Objectives
The primary goal of the Center is to enhance the capabilities and potential of the scientific community in the region, by fostering knowledge, collaboration, and synergy.
Equipped with cutting-edge tools for morphological, genetic, and genomic research, the Center also houses invaluable natural history collections and biodiversity data. Additionally, it features a computational hub designed for advanced statistical and bioinformatic analyses.
Key focus areas include:
i) Establishing, managing, and preserving reference natural history collections.
ii) Processing, sequencing, and analyzing genomes and molecular markers.
iii) Generating, maintaining, and analyzing biodiversity data.
iv) Training scientists and promoting the dissemination of biodiversity knowledge in the Balearic Islands.
The CBB inside and outside the UIB
Within the administrative organisation of the University of the Balearic Islands, the CBB is a Functional Unit of the Multidisciplinary Centre for Balearic Biodiversity (CMB), which in turn forms part of the Area of Support for Experimentation and Scientific and Technical Services (ASESC).
At the State level, the CBB is part of the Network of Centres for the Study and Management of Biodiversity, generated within the framework of the objectives of component 17 of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Spanish Government (which finances us).
Funding
The Balearic Biodiversity Centre is a scientific initiative designed to advance the “Complementary Plans” focused on biodiversity.
The programme is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, in collaboration with the Government of the Balearic Islands, under the title ‘Biodiversity Exploration, Analysis and Outlooks: Possible Responses to the 2030 Strategy for Sustainable Development in a Scenario of Global Change’. It falls under the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan for ‘Institutional Reform and Capacity-building in the National Science, Technology and Innovation System’ (NextGenerationEU Funds).

Genomics Platform
The Genomics Platform is funded by the ERDF Operational Programme 2021-2027 through the HiTech Platform. This initiative, aligned with the objectives of the RIS3 and EECTI 2021-2027 plans, aims to contribute to the development of a sustainable economy, address key societal challenges, and enhance the global visibility of research conducted in the Balearic Islands.
The Genomics Platform enhances the capabilities of the Balearic Centre for Biodiversity by enabling the generation and analysis of genomic data using cutting-edge techniques. This advances our understanding of biodiversity while creating a valuable scientific resource that strengthens the technical expertise of both the research community and the business sector. Additionally, the platform serves as a key advisory body for environmental managers, supporting informed decision-making in biodiversity conservation.
